Sartorial dilemma of epic proportions!

If you follow me on Twitter, you know that this morning I paid one whole dollar for a double layer silk dress. The top layer is blue-green silk, and the under layer is very pale blue silk. If I were to go out and buy the amount of silk in that dress, well, I'd be stupid because my credit card would probably be declined.

I was all ready to cut it up to make a quilt, when a little voice in my brain said "Try it on. Just see if it will go over your ass."

So I did. I knew I might like the dress when it bypassed my hips with little protest. I knew I couldn't get away with a bra under it. One-shouldered silk confections like that just don't work with actual undergarments.

Well, it turned out that it fit, and looked pretty good if I say so myself.

Yes, I know, my legs are all banged up. I don't know why that is, but it is always the case. Thank God for opaque tights.

So the question is: do I cut up the dress and use it in a really gorgeous silk quilt, or do I keep it on the snowball's chance that I'll have occasion to wear it in an environment where I won't throw Maury's jacket on over it in an attempt to become invisible?

Oh, PS - if you cut it up, I'll come down there and personally throw you in the looney bin.
DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT.
You. Look. Seriously. Amazing.

hehe. Here is the key: bias cut silk. When clothes are cut on a bias, they somehow magically drape perfectly. It's hard to find stuff made from bias cut fabrics because you end up using way more of it than you would otherwise.

Keep the dress- while it still fits. When it doesn't fit you can make it into what ever old lady thing you decide to make it into. Keep the dress.

i take umbrage at your assumption that i'm going to become a little old lady someday. i'm still deep in denial about the possibility.

aw, shucks. i feel a little bit bad because it was hanging on the "regular" dress rack and i thought maybe it belonged on the "prom dress" rack. so i asked to make sure, and the sweet little old lady who works there finally decided it was a "regular" dress. she's very sweet, but sometimes she's not quite "all there," if you know what i mean, so i felt a bit like i was taking advantage. oh, well.

keep it! I once found a dress that cost about $2.50, much less then the material or the many buttons on it were worth. It became my all time favorite dress and has been worn at least 100 times! I even took it to Mumbai, India, with me.

You can always cut it up if it at some time gets damaged or worn... but until then, enjoy it!

i think you look awesome! keep it! and why the hell was it only a dollar?!

Mary Kitt-Neel said...

it was a dollar because it was at a thrift store where all the clothes are a dollar except for things like prom dresses and wedding dresses.

tell you what, tho. i really got my comeuppance for being all show-offy with it. woke up with flu today. as lucy van pelt would say, "ARRRRRGH!"

Keep it! It looks so good. I like your hair, too. Is it shorter?

my hair is actually getting long enough to bug me! i almost always lop off a few inches in the summer because it gets so ridiculously hot and humid here.
